This year St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday…now that’s what I’d call lucky! Here are some St. Patrick’s Day party drinks to help you celebrate from the morning to the wee hours. Sure and begorrah!

Irish Coffee Drinks

Traditional Irish Coffee:

  • Coffee
  • Bushmills Irish Whiskey
  • Baileys Irish Cream
  • Whipped cream on top (sprinkle with green sugar for some special flare!)

Variations you might try:

  • Swap the coffee for hot chocolate — yummy!
  • Make a frozen version of Irish coffee using mint coffee Irish Cream and adding some coffee ice cream
  • Make an Irish martini by swapping the Bushmills for vodka and drizzling in some caramel

Irish Beer Drinks

Black and TanIrish party drinks

  • First fill your glass halfway with Harp Ale
  • Then slowly add Guinness Draught Stout by pouring it over the back of a spoon so it rolls down the inside of your glass and doesn’t mix with the ale

Black Velvet — Mix one half Guinness with one half champagne — so fancy!

Guinness Float — Add vanilla ice cream to a glass of Guinness for a drink and dessert all in one.

Fighting Irish — Add one shot of Bushmills to a glass of Harp Ale

Make a Leprechaun Catcher for St. Patrick’s Day

leprechaun trap

As everyone knows, leprechauns hoard pots of gold, and if caught, must reveal their treasure’s location to their captor. This St. Patrick’s Day, help your kids create a clever device to try and catch a Leprechaun. If they’re lucky, they might score some gold…if not, maybe some gold coins and a note to be treasured.

Here are some easy ways to make a Leprechaun catcher, and some of our favorite creative photos to inspire you…

  • Decorate empty boxes using rainbows and the color green,  shamrocks, and shiny foil (Leprechauns love pretty things.)
  • Make “traps” out of dropping cages (empty strawberry containers work well), trapdoors (box flaps that will give way),  treasure left on tissue paper that will break with the leprechaun’s weight, or the more traditional method of a box propped up by a stick that can be pulled out to catch the greedy leprechaun inside.
  • Use enticing bait. Gold coins (or paper coins colored gold), gold painted rocks, or Lucky Charms cereal are all good choices.
  • Be creative! Get those creative juices flowing. Leprechauns can be tricky. You’ll have to come up with something pretty special if you hope to catch one.

Here are some photos of  great Leprechaun traps we’ve seen:

leprechaun catcher

Whether or not your Leprechaun catchers are successful, those sneaky little guys usually leave the maker something for their effort, such as a little candy treat, a few coins, and a note. Here is a poem that one Leprechaun left…

”You think you can trick me with rainbows and gold. But I’m really fast, even though I am old. Here is a treat to help you play. I hope you have a happy St. Patrick’s Day!”

Make Your Own Terrarium

Ready for some instant springtime? Bring a little green into your home by making a terrarium.

make your own terrarium

Terrariums are beautiful, unique, and so easy to make and care for! Here is how to make your own succulent terrarium:

Materials:

  • A clear glass container such as a bubble bowl or vase (take a look at Goodwill for some cheap and unique options)
  • Sand or soil
  • Plants (succulents, cacti, air plant, ivy and dwarf varietals are good options)
  • Accents such as moss, shells, pebbles, crystals, or anything that you think would look nice
  • Water (distilled is best)

Directions:

  1. Pour a base layer of sand into your bowl to anchor your plants.
  2. Arrange your plants in the terrarium, keeping the root ball and soil in tact.
  3. Carefully add more sand around the base of the plants so that it is level with the top of the dirt.
  4. Arrange dry moss if desired.
  5. Add small pebbles or any other decorative accents.
  6. To water, carefully pour 1/2 -1 cup of water directly over the top of each plant to be sure they are completely moist. (You can check to see if they are watered well enough by lifting the terrarium and checking the bottom. you should see a small spot of moisture under each plant.)
  7. Enjoy your terrarium!

** If you live in the Portland area, be sure to check out Artemisia on SE 28th Avenue. They have all the materials you can imagine for creating beautiful terrariums. They also have workshops. What a great idea for a party or get together!

Make A T-Shirt Scarf

We are always looking to find clever ideas for our teens to do for a party craft or a team building event.  This couldn’t be easier!

Materials

  • T-Shirt
  • Scissors or a cutting mat, and rotating cutter

Directions

1.   The first thing you need is an old t-shirt.  If it is for a sports team, make sure you use team colors.

2.  Next, cut off the top of the t-shirt just under the armpits.

3.  You will now have one large loop of fabric.Time to stretch it!  And I mean stretch.  Put your foot on the loop and stretch the fabric upward with your hands.  Work in pairs and have each person grab an endand pull.  It should end up long enough to loop around your neck twice.

4.  You are done with the scarf!

Flower Embellishment

This is the template I used to create the folded flower petals.  I traced it onto the extra fabric, or you could use a contrasting color.
