The Year of the Dragon — The dragon is the mightiest of all the Chinese zodiac animals. Where last year’s rabbit was known for his calm and tranquility, the dragon represents intensity and enthusiasm. 2012 looks to be a year of great excitement!
Clean Things Up! — Traditionally, right before Chinese New Year is the time to clean up the house, get a new haircut, and treat yourself to a new outfit to represent the year’s new beginnings.
Cook Up Some Dumplings and Noodles — There are some traditionally lucky foods served on or prior to Chinese New Year. Crescent shaped dumplings are eaten to represent the coins of ancient China and thus bring financial prosperity. Long noodles are served to promote a long and prosperous life. The longer, the better!
Decorate with Red — Red is the traditional color of Chinese New Year. Lanterns, banners, and paper cutouts
are often hung to foster good luck. Also, children are often given tokens of money or candy in lucky red envelopes
at the start of the new year.
Make a Spark! — Fireworks and party poppers are a traditional part of the Chinese New Year celebration whose noise is said to help scare off evil spirits and bad luck. Don’t have any handy? A fun option is to stomp on a roll of bubble wrap to make the same popping noise.
