Make Your Own Terrarium

Ready for some instant springtime? Bring a little green into your home by making a terrarium.

make your own terrarium

Terrariums are beautiful, unique, and so easy to make and care for! Here is how to make your own succulent terrarium:

Materials:

  • A clear glass container such as a bubble bowl or vase (take a look at Goodwill for some cheap and unique options)
  • Sand or soil
  • Plants (succulents, cacti, air plant, ivy and dwarf varietals are good options)
  • Accents such as moss, shells, pebbles, crystals, or anything that you think would look nice
  • Water (distilled is best)

Directions:

  1. Pour a base layer of sand into your bowl to anchor your plants.
  2. Arrange your plants in the terrarium, keeping the root ball and soil in tact.
  3. Carefully add more sand around the base of the plants so that it is level with the top of the dirt.
  4. Arrange dry moss if desired.
  5. Add small pebbles or any other decorative accents.
  6. To water, carefully pour 1/2 -1 cup of water directly over the top of each plant to be sure they are completely moist. (You can check to see if they are watered well enough by lifting the terrarium and checking the bottom. you should see a small spot of moisture under each plant.)
  7. Enjoy your terrarium!

** If you live in the Portland area, be sure to check out Artemisia on SE 28th Avenue. They have all the materials you can imagine for creating beautiful terrariums. They also have workshops. What a great idea for a party or get together!

Make A T-Shirt Scarf

We are always looking to find clever ideas for our teens to do for a party craft or a team building event.  This couldn’t be easier!

Materials

  • T-Shirt
  • Scissors or a cutting mat, and rotating cutter

Directions

1.   The first thing you need is an old t-shirt.  If it is for a sports team, make sure you use team colors.

2.  Next, cut off the top of the t-shirt just under the armpits.

3.  You will now have one large loop of fabric.Time to stretch it!  And I mean stretch.  Put your foot on the loop and stretch the fabric upward with your hands.  Work in pairs and have each person grab an endand pull.  It should end up long enough to loop around your neck twice.

4.  You are done with the scarf!

Flower Embellishment

This is the template I used to create the folded flower petals.  I traced it onto the extra fabric, or you could use a contrasting color.

Valentine’s Day Scratch-Off Cards

Design and create your own Valentine’s Day personalized scratch-off cards for that someone special. It’s easy!

valentines day craft idea

We found this great Valentine’s Day idea in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.  Now you can make your own cool scratch-offs with prizes that are meaningful to you. Have fun!

  1. Download the BHG Valentine template or use your computer to design your own Valentine scratch-off cards, writing a message on top and some scratchable prizes (that you will cover) on the bottom. Be sure to space your prizes out so that they have their own space to be covered with scratch-off paint.
  2. Print your card(s) onto cardstock.
  3. Next, you will make the scratch -off part of the card. To do this, first either use a coin or make a cardboard tracing shape that will cover the wording for each of your prize options.  Trace the shape onto the paper side of a piece of clear contact paper.
  4. To make the scratch-off paint, mix two parts metallic acrylic paint with one part dishwashing detergent. Use a small paintbrush to apply a thin coat of the paint to the front of your Con-tact paper. Let this dry for an hour.  After this layer is dry, repeat the process with a second (and if necessary a third) coat of the scratch-off solution.  (You can also purchase pre-made scratch-off stickers.)
  5. When dry, cut out your scratch-off shapes using the outline you made on the back of the Con-tact paper. Peel off the paper and stick the shapes onto your card to cover each of your prizes.
  6. Package your special card with a new penny!
